As yet no traces of it have been found in the Gangetic valley, which in later times played an impor\-tant part in the cultural and political history of India. \expndtw3 Wherefrom, then, did the Indus valley culture origi\-nate ? Was it an independent growth on Indian soil ? \expndtw0 Or, was its development due to the contact and impact \expndtw5\loch\af0\hich\af0\dbch\f2\cchs0 \'b0\hich\af0\dbch\af2\loch\f0\cchs0 !u ^\super Clent\nosupersub  \super c\nosupersub ;\super vilisatio\nosupersub *s of Elam, Mesopotamia and \expndtw2 other Western lands ? Of course, the   Win\-\expndtw-2 nings of its civilisation may go earlier still, for Mohenio-\expndtw-1 daro and its complex city life was a product of centuries \expndtw4 - if^i\super utlon\nosupersub '   \super Mo\loch\af0\hich\af0\dbch\f2\cchs0 \'a3\hich\af0\dbch\af2\loch\f0\cchs0 eove\nosupersub r\sub \}\nosupersub   a comparison  of its   finds \expndtw3 with Mesopotamian and Elamite relics shows resemb\-\expndtw4 lances    which  could  not  be  merely  fortuitous    If \expndtw2 as has been supposed, they prove that there  was inter\-course between these countries the Indus valley   civi\-\expndtw1 lisation may be rightly taken to be "contemporary with \expndtw3 the early culture of Sinner and with the later Pre-dilu-\expndtw1 vian culture of Elam and Mesopotamia."}\par }
